Directory Submission Guide
The key point in this Directory Submission Guide is this : A directory listing's value is not in the traffic it brings, but in the quality of in-pointing links it provides. The more sites that link to your site (i.e., in-pointing links), and the more credible the linking sites are, and the closer the linking sites are to the theme of your site (even to the topic of individual pages), the more "popularity points" Search Engines award to your site and Web pages. Links in the major directories (Yahoo! and DMOZ) are valuable for the credibility they give your site. However, consider them as just one part of your link mix. You may choose to submit to 2nd tier, niche and local directories instead, and get links from complimentary sites. Value Exchanging can also contribute to your link-building program. Keep in mind that the major role of good inbound links is to get the "Traffic" ball rolling. Secure links in the normal course of your business development. There is no need to daily dedicate a big chunk of time to this task. Your main priority should always be content creation. Additional Advice in Directory Submission Guide 1) Before listing with any hub or directory, make sure it's solid... * Examine the directory or hub itself. Does it IMPRESS you? Does it seem to be a bunch of crummy links or is it extensive, and composed of good-quality Web sites that are well categorized? * Use Search It! to verify that its Google PR is at least 4 (good reputation at Google) and that its Alexa ranking is near or better than (i.e., less than) 100,000 (an indication of popularity/usage). However, since very few people use directories to find sites, worthwhile directories to submit to may have Alexa rankings as high as 200,000. Do not sign up with a good-looking but fly-by-night link-farm-trap. 2) Be wary of submitting to hundreds or thousands of free directories using submitter software. Many are not quality directories, and most have backlogs of several thousand sites to review. This has worsened, as submitter software allows even more Webmasters to submit their sites. Search Engines now view many free directories as link farms, since the owners have to bulk approve (without review) just to keep up with the large number of submissions they receive every day. Stick to submitting to one or two quality authority directories and a few targeted niche directories. This is the key point in this Directory Submission Guide. 3) Keep it real at the directories. If you're accepted as an editor at one of the directories (for example, DMOZ), review both SBI! and non-SBI! sites. Your goal should be to enhance the overall quality of the directory, thereby increasing the value of its in-pointing link to your site. So play by a directory's rules. Cross-promoting is a no-no. Review all sites with the same objectivity.
