Free Directory Listing

Major Directories

Free Directory Listing: There are several different types of directories to which you can submit your site. Each has a different set of benefits and issues.

There are two top tier directories -- Yahoo! Directory (not to be confused with Yahoo! Search) and Open Directory Project (ODP, or DMOZ as it's also known).

Yahoo! Directory :There's a $299 annual recurring fee ($600 for adult sites). At this cost, you'll have to decide whether it's worth it, according to your own circumstances.

Open Directory (DMOZ)

Open Directory is a free directory listing to list your site. Patience, though, is definitely a virtue! This directory is maintained by community editors who evaluate sites for inclusion.

2nd Tier, Niche and Local Directories

Second tier directories are not quite on par with the majors. That shouldn't deter you, though. Remember, you are not after the traffic from 2nd Tier, Niche and Local directories. You want the valuable in-pointing link. There are other advantages, too,including free directory listing, that make a 2nd tier directory a valid option to consider...

* Entry is easier.

* They are also relatively cheap.

* You can generally get a good link in a relevant category. (Generally, links closer to the top level directory are worth more -- i.e., a listing in Shopping > Clothes is worth more than one in Shopping > Clothes > Women's Clothes.)

*Your listing is not diluted by a million other links in the same category, making it more valuable to a Search Engine (the more links on a page, the less value is bestowed to each link).

As time allows, investigate theme directories for your niche, along with local directories for your state/province or region.

Keep in mind these basic rules for listing your site...

* Create a compelling Title and Description, containing your most important keyword (or keywords).

* List your site in the correct category.

====Side Bar=======

Get your site listed in the Category that contains your most important keyword (or part of your most important keyword phrase) in its Title. If there's no corresponding Category, try to find the most accurate Category as far up in the directory hierarchy as possible.

For example, a site listed in...

Main Category > Subsection > Sub-subsection

..... would score higher than a site listed in...

Main Category > Subsection > Sub-subsection > Sub-sub-subsection

..... all other things being equal.

Take note of the main Category listings for each search. Drill down and investigate thoroughly the most likely Categories for your site. Make special note of any Categories that contain your keyword(s) and sites similar to yours. These particular Categories will be the best bets to place your site.

You want your site, your category, and the most popular search terms to all correspond, if possible.

4 Key Resources

Strongest Links is a list of directories that you can sort by name, Google PR, Alexa ranking, whether they have free submissions, and the cost of paid submissions. Click on the link at the top of each column to sort the list. When you're done with that list, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link to the geographic and niche directories.

InfoVileSilencer is another site with a list of directories (many are not included in Strongest Links).

Aviva's Strongest Directories list uses Page Strength to sort directories. It also indicates which are authority directories, the ones that will give you a bigger boost with the SEs.

Web Directories has a comprehensive list of niche directories, sorted by category, then by Google PageRank.
